How we met

It started with chaos and a pediatric code being called overhead. I panicked. I told my coworker, “I can’t. Not a baby.” Especially being a mother to 4 kids, it just hit too close to home. Then out of nowhere, this guy who I didn’t even know turned around with the biggest grin and said, “You got this. Just go!” First time I ever saw his face. I went. The baby didn’t make it. I came back crying, devastated. Surrounded by concerned coworkers, he walked up and said, “Oh, get the f- over it,” and walked away. Rude, right? But instead of being mad, I weirdly... got it. A few minutes later, he sat next to me, put Game of Thrones on his phone, and said, “Watch this.” Zero emotional intelligence, 10/10 distraction skills. Weeks later on a date he explained, “Crying doesn’t save lives, do that later, you have a job to do and people to take care of" Cold? Sure. Accurate? Also yes. And now? That emotionally distant nurse who told me to suck it up is the same man who holds me when life gets heavy and is now stepfather to my four kids. There for ball games, dance practice, after school pick up and morning drop off. Turns out, the guy who acted like he didn’t have a heart actually has one of the biggest! he just hides it behind inappropriate humor and a subscription to HBOMax.
