Kimber: Matt and I both went to Baylor University and shared many mutual friends through sorority/fraternity life. I recall seeing him around but didn't actually meet him until afterwards, when I moved to Houston to pursue my doctorate. I remember first meeting Matt at one of his fraternity brother's weddings in Houston. I attended as a guest with a mutual friend of ours. Matt conveniently introduced himself to me when we were standing in line at the bar and both of our dates were in the bathroom. Matt: We definitely met for the very first time at the wedding. However, I consider our first "official meeting" to be a couple months after the wedding, when we both attended a BU football watch party with some fraternity and sorority friends. There was definitely an instant attraction. Actually, Kimber & I both asked our mutual friend David if the other person was single that night! He gave us the thumbs up there was a shared interest so we chatted together the rest of the evening. I asked for Kimber's number and we had brunch the next day. The rest is history.
San Antonio holds a very special place in our hearts. It was the first trip we took, just the two of us, and it's where we said "I Love You." We try to go back on a special trip every year. In August 2019, we went back for our annual couple's weekend, but Matt had plans to make this the most special trip yet! He made a dinner reservation at Landry's, our favorite restaurant along the Riverwalk, and planned to ask Kimber to marry him on an iconic river bridge along their walk to dinner. Matt was going to ask someone to take their photo on the bridge, and surprise Kimber by proposing instead. But when they got to the bridge- there was NO ONE around to take a picture. He couldn't stall long enough without looking suspicious so they had to keep walking! They circled back around to a quaint waterfall Matt remembered Kimber liked near the restaurant and (thankfully!) there were lots of people in this busy spot. Matt asked a stranger to take a picture with his phone, said a bunch of really sweet things neither he nor Kimber remember exactly because it happened so fast, and then got down on one knee and asked Kimber to marry him. She said "Yes, of course!" while a mariachi band played in the background across the river and on-lookers clapped, cheered, and whistled. (Seriously, it felt like a scene out of a movie!) And it turns out we were WAY luckier than we could've ever planned. The nice man who took our photo quickly realized a proposal was happening and recorded a video on Matt's phone. Even more incredibly (and unknown to us) another engagement had taken place at the waterfall just minutes before we walked up! A close friend of that couple was a professional photographer who had flown in for their engagement. Standing just a few feet away after her own friend's engagement, she snapped tons of gorgeous photos of our proposal and graciously offered to send them to us as her gift! Special thanks to Bonnie for those photos. It was perfect!
