We met at the gym in Lawrenceville NJ. We were both taking boxing classes. One day, few years back, I was wearing a T-shirt that a friend had brought me from Turkey (it had Istanbul logo). Baris approached me, and, timidly, asked me if I was Turkish. I was tempted to answer, "Yes," but I didn't. From that moment on, slowly, we became friends and few moths later we became more seriously involved. Eventually I introduced him to my other Turkish friends and we all became a big fat Turkish/Italian family. There is one thing thou: if you ask him, he'd tell you a different story. He'd say he asked me: "Have you ever been to Turkey?"Should we believe him? Sure why not, after all the most important thing is that our friendship became love, turning a dream into a beautiful reality.

Ci siamo conosciuti in palestra, a Lawrenceville NJ, durante le lezioni di kickboxing. Un giorno, qualche anno fa, indossavo una T-shirt che un’amica mi aveva portato dalla Turchia. Baris mi si avvicino' e, timidamente, mi chiese se fossi turca. Ero tentata di rispondergli: “Sì, lo sono”, ma non lo feci. Dal quel momento, piano piano, diventammo amici ed io gli feci conoscere altri miei amici turchi. Iniziammo quindi a frequentarci in modo più assiduo. È doverosa una precisazione: se chiedete a lui, vi racconterà una storia diversa e vi dirà di avermi chiesto: “Sei mai stata in Turchia?" Che dite, ci crediamo? Ma sì, tanto conta solo come il nostro incontro sia diventato amore, trasformando un sogno in una bellissima realtà

Barış’la New Jersey Lawrenceville’de bir spor merkezinde tanıştık. İkimizde kickboks dersleri alıyorduk. Bir gün üzerimde İstanbul logosu olan, arkadaşımın Türkiye’den bana hediye getirdiği, tşörtü giyiyordum. Barış bana yaklaştı ve Türk olup olmadığımı sordu. “Evet” demek istedim ama demedim O andan sonra zaman içinde arkadaş olduk ve aylar sonra ise ciddi bir ilişkiye adım atmıştık. Barış’ı diğer Türk arkadaşlarımla tanıştırdım ve kocaman bir Türk/İtalyan ailesi olduk. Aslında şöyle bir durum da var. Barış’a sorsanız tanışma hikayemizin; bana “Hiç Türkiye’de bulundun mu” diye sorarak başladığını söyler. Ona inanmalı mıyız? Neden olmasın? Sonuçta en önemli şey şu ki arkadaşlığımız aşka ve bir rüyayı da gerçeğe dönüştürdü.

That day we were planning to have a late picnic in Central Park, but Baris wanted to go boating in the pond next to Loeb Boathouse. We talked about it for some time, but we never had the opportunity to do so. So of course I did not imagine his intentions. When we were in the middle of the pond Baris stopped rowing. He took the thermos out in which we had put wine and after quickly drinking the wine (I was afraid police would come) he took the ring he had hidden in his backpack and asked, "Miss Alice Pellegrini, would you like to be my wife?" As you can imagine, I was speechless. I felt my heart beat faster. It was a very romantic moment, which I will never forget. Soon we will become husband and wife and this is our fairy tale.

Quel giorno avevamo intenzione di fare un picnic in Central Park, ma Baris volle prima fare un giretto in barca, nel laghetto vicino al Loeb Boathouse, visto che ne parlavamo da tempo, ma non ne avevamo mai avuto l'occasione. Non immaginavo le sue intenzioni. Quando eravamo nel bel mezzo del laghetto, Baris smise di remare, prese la thermos nella quale avevamo messo del vino e,dopo aver bevuto "molto velocemente" (avevo paura che la polizia arrivasse) ed essersi goduto la vista, si giro', prese l'anello che aveva nascosto nello zaino e mi chiese: "Miss Alice Pellegrini, vorresti diventare mia moglie?". Come potete immaginare, rimasi senza parole. Sentivo solo il mio cuore battere più velocemente e l’amore che provo per lui era come il cielo: infinito ed eterno. Piu' tardi alcuni amici ci raggiunsero per fare un brindisi e festeggiare insieme a noi. E' stato un momento molto romantico, che non dimenticherò mai. Tra poco diventeremo marito e moglie... e questa è la nostra favola.

O gün Central Park’ta akşamüstü bir piknik yapalım diye plan yapıyorduk. Ancak Barış Loeb Boathouse yakınında bulunan gölde kayığa binelim istedi. Bir süredir gölde kayığa binme planları yapıyorduk ama fırsatımız olmamıştı. Bu nedenle gerçek niyetini anlamadan planladığımız gibi kayıkla göle açıldık. Gölün tam ortasındayken Barış birden kürekleri bıraktı ve içine şarap koyduğumuz termosu alıp bardaklara şarap doldurdu ve içtik (bu sırada polis gelir mi diye korkamadım değil Çantasına sakladığı yüzüğü çıkardı ve “Alice Pellegrini karım olur musun” diye sordu. Tahmin edebileceğiniz gibi o an nefesim kesildi. Kalbimin hızlı atışını duyuyordum. Hiç unutmayacağım çok romantik bir andı. Çok yakında karı koca olacağız ve bu bizim peri masalımız.
