How We Met

Diamond Street Beach - 6/20/2015

It was a typical Saturday in Pacific Beach for Matt in June of 2015. He woke up, ate two breakfast burritos, and met some friends down on the sand. It was there that Matt saw a woman from 100 yards away that he just had to meet. After a couple failed attempts at catching her eye (stupid football trick never works) he swung for the fences. Matt walked down the sand towards his goddess and approached her as she applied sunblock to her face. It was an atypical Saturday for Emma in June of 2015, the first anomaly being that she actually had a Saturday off from work. She woke up late, and while rushing to yoga received the only speeding ticket SDPD gave out that month. This brought her even farther behind schedule, and unable to find parking at Windansea Beach, where she had plans to meet friends. They had to relocate to a beach they'd never been to - Diamond Street Beach. After hours of baking in the sun, they got up to take a dip in the water. Emma was the first one out, and walked back to her towel. While she was re-applying her SPF-50, she felt a shadow fall over her. “Excuse me ma’am? Are you going out in Pacific Beach tonight?”. She opened her eyes and saw the outline of a guy standing nearby. The question took her off guard, but it sounded like the start of a failed pickup line, so she told the poor guy, “Yes.” That was all Matt needed to know - he held out his phone and said “Ok awesome. I’ll call you.” Emma took the phone and started deciding which fake number to put into it, but when she looked back up, Matt was already halfway down the beach. Emma fielded calls from several of Matt’s friends that day, and they finally coordinated a meeting at Open Bar, where she returned his phone. Over the next several months, Matt continued to check on Emma about once a week. They occasionally crossed paths, but the first date didn’t come until October of that year. And that was the last first date either of them would ever go on.
