How We Met

We met at a circus in 2019, and as crazy as that sounds, we aren't kidding. I was performing a contortion, acrobatic routine meanwhile my future husband was in the audience watching from afar. At the time I was selling Bend It Like BaiYu merch and was still attending Iowa State University, and Jordan happened to be one of the first people to get a shirt, from then on we became best of friends. Meanwhile the entire world was being isolated due to the pandemic, Jordan and I talked every day and grew extremely close, sharing childhood trauma, laughter, and much much more. Never did I think I was going to fall so hard for this man, or ever get to marry him, but despite never having a father figure in my life, Jordan has showed me every day what it's like to truly be loved and treated right. We moved in together in 2022, got a puppy together and made it our mission to improve ourselves and strip ourselves of our toxic traits. Better together, we continue to improve and show each other love each and every day.

About BaiYu

BaiYu was born in Xiamen City, Fujian, China with a rare genetic condition called albinism. This means she lacks pigment in her skin, hair and eyes, resulting in her visual impairment. BaiYu was later abandoned under a lychee tree by her birth parents due to China's one child policy. Later found by the police, BaiYu was taken to an orphanage where she stayed until later being adopted by her mom Lisa Fisher on Octoboer 15, 2004. During her time in the orphanage, BaiYu developed serious lead poisoning and was extremely malnutritioned. BaiYu also developed several behaviors she would later have to quit. I was deathly afraid of pretty much everything: dolls, people, cars, closed-in places, you name it, and I made sure that everyone knew it. I was constantly miserable and screaming about it, so much so that I screamed through all 18 hours of the plane flight home and even managed to hit a few people as I threw banana bread across the plane. Coming to the United States, I met my older brother Talen and my sister Mya, who was only 4 months older than I. Despite hating my mother, I didn't want to share her either. I would scream when she left for work, was fine while she was gone and then picked up again when she returned. I had to learn to like this woman eventually, I had a lot of learning to do, including quitting several behaviors I acquired while in the orphanage including punching and food-grabbing/hoarding. Later enrolled in play-therapy, my behaviors began to change even without the development of my English skills quite yet. Play therapy demonstrated how anxiously attached I was, drawing pictures of my mom like she wasn't quite real, like she could disappear at any time. During sessions, my mother became very aware of the abuse I experienced early in life, finding reasoning for my extreme fear. Growing up, I was an exceptional student, an accomplished pianist and an elite athlete. I participated in gymnastics for several years and skipped 3 levels of gymnastics in 2 years. I've received recognition for my piano playing through the Iowa Music and Teacher Association including but not limited to 1st, 1st alternate and honor roll. I then later transitioned into dance at the age of 10. I then danced for 8 years at Iowa Ballet Academy, and 5 years competitively. As a competitive dancer, I attended Youth American Grand Prix, Showbiz National Talent, NUVO, 24/7 and many more competitions where I found my love for performing. Alongside my competitive dancing, I also found joy in performing in local companies such as Iowa Dance Theatre and Yaro Dance Company, where I took on various roles including but not limited to: Wild Donkey, Arabian Queen, Snow Flake, Snow Crystal and Russian Doll. At the age of 16, I began self-teaching myself contortion and hand balancing, luckily for me, I had an athletic background, but that doesn't mean teaching myself these skills was easy by any means. This new hobby of mine alongside my dancing resulted in several success including several dance scholarships, trophies, awards and even the opportunity to train with industry professionals. In 2018, I attended dancer palooza in Long Beach, California and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life, dancing and meeting some of the cast of Dance Moms, taking class from industry professional and even got the chance to be in famous dance photographer Jordan Matter's YT video! During my time in California, I also was given the opportunity to train and hone my Aerial skills with Le Petite Cirque teacher, former Cirque Du Soleil performer and winner of China's Got Talent season 4, Junru Wang. I now am currently working as a Court Research Associate with Equifax, I dance and do hand-balancing on the side and will soon be transitioning into my new job at Wells Fargo as an Escalation Specialist.

About Jordan

Jorrdan Harrah was born in Atlantic, Iowa to Wendi and Larry Harrah and older brothers Matt and Joe Harrah. At the age of 2, Jordan moved to Clarion, IA after his father Larry received a job offer. The family first had a farm house close to the lake and later moved to Wendi’s current house in Clarion about a year later. Not long later Jordan's younger brother Alex was born. Jordan attended elementary school at Clarion-Goldfield. Jordan loved playing all sports and eventually realized that he had the ability to run much faster than most of his classmates and excelled in sports where running was involved like baseball, football and track. The small town life made it so all of my friends only lived a few blocks away. I could walk or ride my bike to anywhere in town. In the summers I enjoyed swimming in my moms pool and playing football in the backyard with my friends. Small town Iowa didn’t have much to offer, other than out-door activities like fishing, hiking, and camping. Winters were fun though because we were a snowmobile family. As I grew up, my parents always took the family on vacations all across the US, Mexico and to different Caribbean islands. I believe my parents wanted us to experience life outside small town Iowa. Traveling so much in my younger years gave me an adventurous spirit and I developed a love for sightseeing and exploring the unknown. I attended Clarion-Goldfield middle school where I excelled in academics as well as sports despite being the class clown. Towards the end of my middle school years at the age of 14 I noticed a lump in the right side of my neck and after having a biopsy it came back as stage 3B Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer. This was a shock to my entire family and would soon be the toughest battle I could have ever imagined. I received chemo and radiation treatments on and off for 6 months at the University of Iowa Children’s hospital until I was eventually declared cancer free. Now was the time of recovery because the cancer treatments had detrimental effects on my body leaving me in an extremely weakened state. Through it all, I never lost my sense of humor. I chose to take this horrible thing and use it as a learning experience. I learned that everyday is a gift and living in the moment one day at a time is okay. This battle left me with a different out look on life and I knew what really mattered which was family, friends and life experiences. They say laughter is the best medicine. If you’re around me you know I’m always cracking jokes. I then attended Clarion-Goldfield high school where I tried to find my identity outside of just being the cancer kid and after graduating from high school I eventually moved to Des Moines, Iowa and got a job at Unity Point Health where I still work today. I eventually met BaiYu when I spontaneously attended a circus show, that BaiYu performed in, and as soon as I saw her blindly shoot a bow and arrow with her feet while doing a handstand, I knew that I had to get to know her. At the time she was selling her own merch, so of course I had to buy some “Bend It Like BaiYu” t-shirts! We soon became best friends, mainly because of how similar our personalities are and the fact we both have such spontaneous and adventurous spirits. BaiYu ended up getting job at the same hospital as me and after getting to know her even more over the next year we fell madly in love we became inseparable. We started dating June 6th 2022 and we are getting married on our 1 year anniversary so 6-6 will forever be our special date. We have two 2 wiener dogs and a cat together and life is so perfect. Everyone in my family says the same thing “I can tell you are truly happy” All I know is when u find this type of love you never let it go! Fast forward to now where I get to marry the woman of my dreams and live happily ever after. I’m the luckiest man alive! I LOVE YOU 白玉 ❤️
