The Story of Us

From long-distance to Marriage

Jon and Bae met in high school through mutual friends, but it wasn't until after Jon graduated high school and Bae finished her freshman year at Texas State that the two became more acquainted with each other. Shortly before Jon left for Boot Camp, he asked Bae if she would be interested in dating. Although she was interested in Jon, she felt nervous about committing to a relationship, so she declined, but was open to continue talking. During Jon's 90 days in San Diego for basic training, they wrote letters to each other. Bae still has a copy of every letter Jon wrote to her to this day. After he completed basic training, Jon asked Bae again if she would be his girlfriend, and Bae again said "no," as she was still feeling uncertain about committing to a relationship without knowing where he would be stationed. Finally, Jon asked a third time in January, 2017, and Bae said "yes." She liked him so much she figured it was worth a shot despite the 1,125 mile distance between them they would have to endure. The running joke to this day is how he had to ask three times for Bae to be his girlfriend but only once to marry him. Over the next three and a half years, Jon was stationed with the United States Marine Corps in Yuma, AZ, while Bae was a full-time student at Texas State University. They saw each other about 3-4 times a year. The longest time they spent a part was 9 months while Jon was deployed in Bahrain. After Bae graduated and Jon's contract ended, they both moved back to where they grew up - Dallas, TX. They moved in to an apartment together in March 2022 and adopted their cat, Zoey. It was in that apartment where Jon got on one knee and asked Bae to marry him with a bottle of champagne that said "will you marry me?" and a champagne flute that said "yes." The rest is history.
