As we gather to celebrate in Waiʻanae, on the island of Oʻahu, we invite our guests to join us in acknowledging that this ʻāina is part of the larger territory recognized by Native Hawaiians as their ancestral grandmother, Papahānaumoku.
We honor Her Majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani, who, under great duress and protest, yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom to the United States to protect her people from bloodshed. Hawaiʻi remains an illegally occupied nation, and we hold this truth with humility and respect.
As you travel and celebrate here, we ask that you take a moment to honor the ʻāina (land) and the Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian people) who continue to care for and protect it. Each breath of ocean air, each meal grown from this soil, each moment of beauty is a gift from this place. May we receive these gifts with gratitude and tread gently in return.
