Mehndi Night

6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Embassy Suites by Hilton Boston Waltham
550 Winter Street, Waltham, MA 02451

Colorful... bright and glittery. We ask Female guests to avoid yellow (all shades) and Male guests to avoid white (all shades).

It’s a night full of color, music, rituals, and heartfelt blessings, primarily focused on the bride & groom and their transition into married life. The night is filled with dholki music, traditional songs, colorful clothes (often yellow, green, and orange), and dances performed by friends and family. The primary ritual has 4 main things: 1. Applying Oil in Her/His Hair as a way of blessing them with health and beauty before marriage 2. Henna (Mehndi) on their palm-There’s a popular belief that the darker the henna, the stronger the love between the couple. 3. Waving Money Over their Head- an act meant to ward off the evil eye and protect the bride/groom from any negative energy. Cash is waved in a circular motion over the bride/groom’s head and then either donates it or gives it to a needy person 4. Feeding them Something Sweet-This represents a sweet beginning to his/her married life and is also a way of offering love and blessings.

Groom's arrival: The groom doesn’t just come alone—he is accompanied by relatives. Upon arrival, the bride’s family welcomes the guests with flower/rose petals. Entry of the bride: is seen as a moment of pride and respect for her family. This is an emotional highlight—signifying farewell. All the guests will stand up to show respect for the bride as she walks down the aisle. Doodh Pilai: a tradition where the bride's sisters offer the groom a glass of decorated milk and he must drink it and pay a "ransom" to her in the form of money before she allow him to take the bride home. Salami (Gift) : refers to a traditional custom where relatives, friends present money to the bride and groom as a gesture of blessing. Salami is typically given in the form of cash. Giving salami helps maintain reciprocal ties within families and communities. The gesture is often reciprocated at future weddings. There’s no fixed amount—it depends on the relationship with the couple and one’s financial ability.
