When I Met Michael

Mide’s POV

A friend invited me to a barbecue to celebrate the end of the school year. I showed up with a classmate—and for once, we were right on time (no "black people timing" today). We pulled up expecting music, noise, chaos…and instead we were the first ones there. The hosts were still dragging tables around and lighting the grill. That’s when I saw Mike. The moment our eyes met, I thought, “Wow.” (Cue heart-eyes emoji.) There was something about him that instantly drew me in. It was something warm and confidant about him, something calm and magnetic. He came over to say hi, and from that moment on, it was game over. We were laughing, talking about where we were from, random life stuff, and somehow it felt like we already knew each other. I ended up helping set up the rest of the party —although honestly, I barely noticed the time passing. Before we knew it, the party was over and summer had officially begun. When university started back up in the fall, we crossed paths again. And this time? Fireworks. It was a feeling I have never experienced before, and something I still can’t put into words to this day. All I know is, it felt electric. I can say, without a doubt, it was love at first sight, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

When I Met Ayomide

Mike’s POV

Me and my friends were hosting a barbecue at another friend’s house. Mide and her friend happened to be there. She came straight over and asked if anyone needed help while we were still setting up. I tried to play it cool and said nah, but she insisted, so she helped us set up the place. I used that time to get to know her. She was asking me where I’m from, I was asking her where she’s from. She told me she’s from Canada and said she really liked my style. She said she needed to head back home to study, so I asked if she wanted a lift. We dropped her off, and that was the last time I saw her until the next school year — three months later. During the summer, she stayed in touch with one of my best friends. All summer he kept teasing me about “that girl from the barbecue”. I never told him how I felt because I already knew I’d never hear the end of it. He kept saying, “That girl from the barbecue thinks you’ve got a nice smile,” so I smiled and knew what time it was. Summer’s over, uni starts, it’s freshers week. We’re all linking up at another friend’s house, and guess who’s there — “that girl from the barbecue.” I noticed her from across the room and couldn’t take my eyes off her. I made it clear I was interested. We talked and partied all night. It felt like we’d known each other way longer than we actually had. When the night was done, I asked if I could walk her home. It was cold and raining, so I gave her my jacket and walked her back (I was shiverin’ me timbers). We got to her accommodation, she gave me my jacket, thanked me for walking her home… and closed the door in my face. I was confused. Does she like me? Does she not? My phone was dead and I just wanted to charge it to call a taxi, but it felt way too awkward to ask at that point. So I walked 40 minutes back home, smiling in the rain. Ever since that day, I’ve not stopped thinking about her. And here we are today — nine years later.
