Question

What is the Anand Karaj ceremony?

Answer

The Anand Karaj ceremony is a Sikh marriage ceremony that emphasizes spiritual union of the couple in the presence of god and the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture. The couple will circle around the Guru Granth Sahib four times, with each circle (Laav) representing the four stages of spiritual union and devotion to each other and God.

Question

Gurdwara Etiquette & Guidelines

Answer

We are so excited to have our friends and family partake in our religious ceremony and cultural events! It is important to note that the Gurdwara does have a dress code. Whether you choose to wear traditional Indian clothes or Western clothes, please no exposed back, no midriffs, no sleeveless tops, no shorts, no tight-fitting or short/midi dresses. See link at the top of this page for Indian clothing inspo! HEAD COVERINGS: Men, women, and children are required to cover their heads when inside the Gurdwara. Head coverings such as a rumaal (bandana) or chunni/dupatta (scarf) are recommended, although we will provide rumaals for those who do not have. REMOVE SHOES: Upon entering the Gurdwara, shoes must be removed. We recommend wearing comfy shoes that are easy to slip-off for easy removal. SEATING: Guests will be expected to sit on the floor during the ceremony, so please keep that in mind when deciding on an outfit. Limited alternate seating is still available for guests that are unable to sit on the floor.
