The Athletic Association is the perfect choice for those who are making their first visit to Chicago and want to catch our city's most iconic views and experience Chicago's rich history and architecture. The Chicago Athletic Association opened in 1893 amid the boom surrounding the World’s Columbian Exposition. For over 120 years the Athletic Association was reserved for the wealthy elite as a private athletic club before the building was opened to the public as a hotel and lounge, bar, and restaurant space. We love the Athletic Association for its stunning design, with nods to its original purpose like the billiards room, now called the Game Room. Grab a cocktail and play some pool there or take the express elevator to Cindy's Rooftop, which has our favorite view in the city. The Association is also across the street from Millenium Park, home to the famous Cloud Gate, commonly known as "the bean".

In the mid-1800s, West Loop was a meatpacking district. Because of the brutal treatment of workers in the meatpacking industry, West Loop is an important site in American Labor Organizing history, including the Haymarket Riots. By the mid-19th century, growing knowledge about the inhumane treatment of animals and people in the meatpacking industry meant that the industry largely decentralized, leading the closure and abandonment of West Loop warehouses. 50 years later, post great Recession, West Loop experienced a development boom, with abandoned warehouses being transformed to luxury condos and dining. You'll fit right in at West Loop if you're a young professional who likes to get dressed up for dinner and drinks and don't mind splurging a little on a great meal.

The Robey is in Wicker Park, known for its hipster culture, art, vintage shopping, and nightlife. It is also located off the Blue Line, which is the public transit line that goes to O'Hare Airport. We recommend this to those who are more interested in spending their time experiencing Chicago as locals do (thrifting, dive bars, farmers markets) rather than staying in our city's beautiful downtown area and hitting the big tourist attractions. The Robey has a boutique hotel feel, but we love it for its 3 bars that showcase skyline views and Wicker Park's most bustling 6-way intersection and train stop.
