Unfortunately, the pandemic has dragged on much longer than we anticipated and, while things are looking more hopeful, we've decided to adjust our wedding plans again to be on the safe side. We will be keeping our new wedding date of April 24, 2021, but will only be having a small ceremony with immediate family. We are looking into options for streaming our wedding ceremony for those of you who would like to join us virtually, and will update our wedding website and share more details as we finalize those logistics. We’re still excited about (eventually) celebrating our upcoming union with all of our friends and family and will be planning a vow-renewal ceremony and reception once it is safe to have large in-person gatherings. We will continue to update all of you, and our wedding website, as we plan this new event.
We have made the difficult decision to postpone our wedding due to the COVID-19 outbreak. While we understand this is short notice, especially for those of you who were planning to travel to Maryland from out of town, we do not want to put any of our family members or friends at risk by holding such a large gathering at a time when everyone should instead be social distancing. While we are still planning the details of our new wedding, we are happy to announce the new date for our wedding - April 24, 2021. We will continue to update this website and send updates to everyone via email as we solidify our new plans. In the meantime, we are taking down many of the existing details about our wedding to minimize any confusion, including our registry and the RSVP page. All RSVPs will be reset, and we'll be asking everyone to RSVP again as our new wedding date approaches. Thank you in advance for your understanding. We hope everyone is doing their best to stay safe during this difficult time. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Love, Austin and Katelyn
Our relationship started as two Marylanders out of their element in Texas. There was a lot we had to adjust to; sweltering summers, a general lack of seasons, frontage roads, and a strange inability to make bagels that didn’t just taste like bread (fortunately they made up for it with their kolaches). As we adjusted, we definitely made the most of it, learning how to two-step, enjoying our time sailing in Galveston Bay, and even partaking in the famous Houston rodeo. Most of our early dating life revolved around Houston’s diverse food scene, from Indian to Dim Sum and everything in between. But at the end of the day it was still Texas, and the best food was always the BBQ and Tex Mex. If you’re ever in Houston, we highly recommend the steak fajitas at the El Tiempo on Montrose, far and away our favorite dinner date option!
Just as Austin started to settle down, buying his first house in the Heights, Katelyn was on the move again. This time finding herself in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fortunately, the move kept us within driving distance of one another, with a single road between us. Unfortunately, that stretch of I-10 was the most boring drive imaginable, straight, with no hills, surrounded by bayous and swamps, scenes straight out of True Detective (the first, and best, season of course). Our regular weekend trips back and forth along I-10 were supplemented with more eventful travel, where we would meet in another city for the weekend, often coinciding with work trips or out of town job interviews. We went to the Zoo in San Diego, kayaked on the lake in Austin, went hiking in San Luis Obispo, and enjoyed cannolis in Boston. But we didn’t have to go nearly as far for our favorite trip, the anniversary that we spent in New Orleans. We spent the day sightseeing around the city, sampling Cafe Du Monde’s famous beignets, and even found a great mini-golf course that included two full courses (Austin won both rounds). We spent the night at Bacchanal, taking in the live music and drinking wine under the stars, complete with cheese and meat pairings. While we made great friends and memories along the way, we eventually decided it was time to move back home to Maryland, where we could be reunited in the same city once again, with the added benefit of living closer to both of our families. Austin moved back first, moving in with his parents while he sold his townhouse and waited for Katelyn to join him. Fortunately, it was only a few months later when she too got a job offer in Maryland.
For Katelyn’s birthday, Austin got her a plane ticket back to Maryland to visit him. With a job offer already in hand, there was a lot to celebrate as he drove us over the Bay Bridge on a Friday evening (yes we hit terrible traffic) to an undisclosed location. We pulled up to the beautiful Perry Inn, checked in...and promptly realized the heat in our room was not working. Fortunately, they quickly moved us to a new room, with working heat and an upgraded water-front view. We spent the rest of the evening sipping warm drinks by the fire and enjoying each others company. Austin woke Katelyn up before the crack of dawn to get ready for the big day. He had the whole day planned, but all she knew was that we were getting up to watch the sunrise before the weekend’s festivities started at 7:15 am sharp. We walked around the grounds of the Inn, with beautiful views right on the water, and settled on a dock to sit and watch the sunrise. Katelyn was freezing and just wanted to get up and keep walking, but Austin convinced her to enjoy the moment. Finally, after enough complaining, he agreed to walking around again, but as she turned to walk away, he stopped her, got down on one knee, and the rest is history. The reason for the delay quickly became apparent, as the photographer he arranged came out from her hiding spot where she had captured the moment. After continuing to endure the cold for the rest of our engagement photo shoot, we quickly warmed up by heading into town and making a beeline for the winery. From there we went to the brewery, where we enjoyed playing card games and shuffleboard together (Katelyn won these). We rounded out our weekend together with some crab dip overlooking the bay, an incredibly relaxing couples massage, a celebratory dinner at the Inn, and an art class where we painted Margarita glasses - one of Katelyn’s favorite drinks! He had truly thought of everything.
