Airport Tips

*Please note, prices begin to rise the week after due to Memorial Day Weekend. Non-stop flights after May 26th, 2026 are no longer available. We recommend booking as early as you are able to for the best prices!* Here are helpful tips for flying through Cyril E. King Airport (STT)— this airport is beautiful but runs *very differently* than mainland U.S. airports: ✈️ Biggest tip: arrive EARLY (seriously) Plan to arrive at least 3 hours before your flight. Lines can be long because you go through customs + TSA before departure. Saturdays and late mornings are typically the busiest. Expect extra steps leaving the island. Even though it’s a U.S. territory: You must go through: 1. U.S. Customs & Border Protection 2. Agriculture inspection 3. TSA security The airport is small (and a little limited): Only one terminal—easy to navigate. • Limited food and shopping options • Fewer amenities than major airports Getting to/from the airport: • About 10 minutes from Charlotte Amalie • Taxis are the main transportation and use fixed rates ⏰ Timing matters • Airport opens around 6:00 AM • You can’t check in earlier than ~3 hours before your flight anyway

Car Rentals/Tips

🚗 Where to rent a car (STT airport + nearby) ✈️ At the airport (easiest option) Right at Cyril E. King Airport, you’ll find major companies inside or just outside baggage claim, which is the most convenient option after landing. • Enterprise Rent-A-Car – shuttle pickup, very common choice • Avis Car Rental – inside airport • Budget Rent A Car – inside airport • Hertz – near airport 🌴 Local rental companies (often cheaper + more flexible) These are nearby and sometimes offer airport pickup/shuttle service: • Elite Rental Car – very close to airport • Discount Car Rental – popular + shuttle option • Paradise Rental Car – highly rated local option • Rock City Rentals – great reviews, flexible service • Go Car Rental – smaller local company 💰 Cost & booking tips • Book 2-3+ weeks in advance (cars sell out fast in peak season) • Summer/fall = cheaper but hurricane season • Airport rentals may include extra fees, but off-site requires a taxi/shuttle 🚙 What type of car to get This matters more than people expect: • Jeep or SUV (BEST choice) → hills, steep roads, beach access • Compact car → okay for short stays + budget • Avoid super low cars → some roads are rough The island is mountainous with steep, narrow, winding roads. ⚠️ Driving rules (VERY important) • You drive on the LEFT side of the road • Speed limits: ~20–35 mph • Roads can be steep + curvy 🤔 Do you actually NEED a car? Rent a car if: • You want to explore beaches (Magens Bay, Sapphire, etc.). • You’re staying in a villa or outside town. • You want flexibility.
