A few months after the height of COVID, Jordan, was living in Philadelphia, while Austin, was living at home with his family in Lancaster. One day, as Jordan was casually scrolling through Instagram, she stumbled upon a suggested account and noticed Katz’s name. She remembered meeting him a few years earlier during her freshman year and thought he was quite charming. At the time, she only knew him as Katz because that’s what all his friends called him and she had no idea what his first name was. So, she decided to reach out and slid into his DMs.
Soon after, Jordan moved to Lancaster, delighted to leave behind the unpleasant scents of Philly and the overpriced cost of living. She eagerly embraced the opportunity to pursue both love and her career in a better place. She was graciously welcomed by Austin's family, who let her live with them until she and Austin could find a place of their own. In that time they celebrated birthdays with homemade goodies made by Beck, shared tennis and music lessons with Harmon, enjoyed weekend barbecues with family and friends, and had lively game nights that often ended in shenanigans.
During the spookiest time of the year, Jordan and Austin got the keys to their new apartment on Halloween day. However, they were in for a scare when Jordan accidentally bought a couch that was far too big for the narrow staircase. Despite their best efforts to maneuver the couch and after a good cry in between cushions, they accepted that they couldn't get it past the banister. With the assistance of their friendly new upstairs neighbor, they managed to pack the oversized couch back into their Ford Explorer and transported it to Austin's parents' garage. Fortunately, Austin's dad was a pro at reselling things on craigslist, he was able to get their money back through a guitar trade. Until further notice, Jordan has been banned from purchasing furniture from Facebook unless she measures things first.
The year 2023 was filled with trials and tribulations. Both Jordan and Austin experienced multiple job changes and adopted a second cat together. Despite all the changes, their support for each other remained fierce and patient. They dressed up for the premiere of the Barbie movie, Jordan paid off one of her student loans, and she was cast in the musical Chess. Austin attended his 10-year high school reunion with his friends, and they started the tradition of sending Christmas cards, 2023 marking the second year of this new tradition.
It was an ordinary Friday when Austin finally received the work schedule he had requested, and Jordan's new remote schedule allowed them to spend more time together. They decided to have a date day. Austin slept in, giving no hint that he planned to propose. The night before, after coming home from work at midnight, he had sneakily taken the ring out of its packaging and hidden it near his bedside. As they were taking out the trash, they discussed their plans and agreed on a bookstore date followed by a second round of coffee. Jordan got into the car thinking they were heading to Barnes & Noble, but Austin insisted they check out a smaller bookstore just a street away to see if they had anything new. Despite her reservations about dust allergies, Jordan agreed, and they walked to Dog Star. Upon entering the store, Jordan felt a bit suspicious and nervously sipped her Dunkin. Austin was called over by the store clerk to look at some fantasy books, giving Jordan the opportunity to browse through the shelves as she usually did. Austin, forgetting this habit, nervously stood in the back of the store, trying to figure out how to get his book-loving girlfriend to the proposal point without giving anything away. In a moment of inspiration, Austin said, "Come look at this weird stuffed animal." Jordan obliged, scanning the room for the so-called stuffed animal. He pointed to the corner where a Dr. Seuss plush sat, unimpressively. Jordan continued browsing, then Austin pointed again to an adjacent shelf and said, "What is that." Jordan, initially unable to see the object eventually caught the sight of a tiny decorated ring box, shaped as a book, nestled between the shelves. Amusingly Austin asked, "I wonder what that book is about." Jordan now flushed and nervous, picked up the ring box and lovingly placed it in his hands. With a warm smile and a raised brow she said, "I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me about it..." And thus they were engaged!
