when should i book my trip?

Common booking practices say to book at least 6 weeks in advance of the arrival date. However, the dry season (January) is very popular for both tourism and weddings so we recommend setting a flight alert and booking flights and accommodation sooner rather than last minute.

where do i fly into?

You will fly into Guatemala City, Guatemala at La Aurora International Airport (GUA), which is about 45-75 mins away from the city of Antigua.

what is arrival like at the airport in Guatemala City?

It is very easy! La Aurora is a very small, manageable airport. On the airplane, the flight attendant will let you know about an online customs form that you need to fill out via a QR code. You can also scan it and fill it out once you land. (This has just been updated.) You will need to know the address you will be staying in Guatemala (you can use the address of the hotel in Antigua), your flight number, and your passport number. Once you get off the plane, walk as fast as you can to beat the crowds of people to get into the immigration line, down the escalators. Once you see all the lines forming for the immigration lines, see if one of the lines toward the back have less people, they usually do. Once you get up to the counter, you can greet the agent with a “buenos días” if it is the morning, or “buenas” if it is afternoon or night. They will likely not say anything or ask you any questions. In the rare occasion that they do, just answer truthfully! They will stamp your passport. Then once you find your carousel and your bags, men may kindly try to offer you assistance. You can politely decline. Follow the crowds to the customs line. To your left you will see a place to exchange money, should you wish. There are also bathrooms near the carousel. Here is where you will show the customs official the digital copy of the QR code form that you filled out. A copy was emailed to you or you can take a screenshot. You may be asked to put your bags through an x-ray on the way out. Then you are on your way to see us get married!

how far is Antigua from Guatemala City?

25 miles. The drive can range from 50 minutes to 1 hour & 30 minutes.

how do you travel from Guatemala City to Antigua?

We will arrange travel from the airport to Antigua on your arrival day, we anticipate everyone arriving on the Wednesday before (Jan 28) but if you come earlier, plase let us know so we can help arrange travel. Please book your shuttle with our travel agency directly when leaving Antigua back to Guatemala City!

how do i get around Antigua? is there Uber?

We'd recommend walking, unless you're going outside the city or returning late. We would highly recommend you download the offline map of Antigua, Guatemala before flying out. This will allow you to have access to Google Maps even if your reception is spotty. This is the ultimate hack in case you're ever in a position where you need to get somewhere, but you're too far from WiFi or your service is cut randomly. Or get one of out plentiful Uber ride price was $3-5 within Antigua. That is not a typo!

do i need a passport to come?

Yes, you do. If you do not have one already (or its expiring soon), we recommend you take care of this 3-6 months in advance.

do i need a visa?

If you have a Mexican, Colombian, European, or American passport you will not need a visa. Other countries may need visas to come to Guatemala. Check online or with your embassy for specific country requirements.

what do i need to prepare to travel?

Your passport, some curiosity, and lots of excitement. It is recommended that your passport is still valid for at least 6 months after your visit and that your passport has at least 6 pages of empty passport pages. You do not need a visa to enter Guatemala. Even though the CDC and Embassy may recommend various immunizations, Guatemalan immigration will not check you for any documentation other than your passport and your customs form (more info below). You no longer need to show COVID-19 immunization, although, we'd recommend traveling with your card just in case. Please speak to your doctor about which immunizations may be best before you travel.

i'm nervous about my Spanish. what should i do?

Download Spanish as an offline language from Google Translate. This will allow you to always have access to the app, even if you're without WiFi or your service is spotty. It's a great backup, but to be honest, I think you'll find English is pretty common.

how do i exchange money?

You will have the option to exchange money at the airport after you pick up your bags. Honestly, though, this isn't required. Pretty much everywhere you will visit will accept credit cards and debits cards (even contactless). You will not need to carry much cash. We prefer to use local ATMs in Antigua to take out cash. We always feel best with some local cash on us. The best ATMs to use are 5B.
