Can I rent a car in Costa Rica?

Answer

Yes, you can rent a car in Costa Rica, but there are a few things to keep in mind: Driving at Night: It is not recommended to drive after dark. Road conditions and limited lighting make it unsafe, especially in more rural areas. Road Conditions: The main roads we’ll be traveling are commonly used but not up to U.S. highway standards. Expect potholes and slower travel times. If a truck breaks down, it can block the entire road, and there are often no alternate routes—so delays can happen. Travel Time: Even short distances can take longer than expected due to traffic, road conditions, or unexpected delays. Rental Car Insurance: Costa Rica requires mandatory liability insurance, which typically adds about $100 or more to your rental. This fee may not be included in the rate you see online. Avis Specifics: We rented from Avis. Their quoted rate did not include the mandatory insurance. Also, their location is off-site from the airport, but they offer a free shuttle. It’s about a 5-minute ride from the terminal. It took us about 2 hours to get our car from the time we arrived at the rental location. Dont forget to get your passport, make sure its not expired! Everyone including children and babies need a passport. To travel to Costa Rica, your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. While some sources recommend a six-month validity beyond your arrival date, Costa Rica's official immigration site and other sources state that it only needs to be valid for the duration of your planned stay. However, it's always wise to have a passport with at least six months of validity to avoid potential issues with airlines or in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Will I get to see Monkeys?

There are Monkeys in the rainforest in Manuel Antonio and La Fortunta. You can also see Sloths!! Monkeys are cute but thieves, they will take your wallet, keys, passport, sunglasses, water bottle etc. Please make sure you have everything in a closed bag that is on your person.
