Anyone who knows the bride, Joanna, knows of her headstrong nature and even stronger vocal projection. Unfortunately, a quiet, peaceful, and unassuming Jesse did not. Jesse met Joanna while they were both chaperoning a church youth convention one weekend. Stuck in a cramped church van, he did not say much to her other than the occasional pleasantry, but, as eventually came to light, he thought she was *cute*. And she was. Joanna, on the other hand, was too busy being vexed by the growing noise in the back of the church van, as some young men had taken to yelling and beating each other. At first it was in play, but then, as expected, it was no longer fun for some. Eventually, Joanna could stand it no longer as a (semi) full-out beating took place in the back of the van. So she screamed. Directly into poor Jesse’s ear. And that was his first impression. Strangely undeterred by his ringing ears, Jesse found himself drawn to continue his service at the church. One place he served with particularly was the Young Adult ministry, of which Joanna was the director at the time. His motives were purely to serve the Lord, of course. Joanna, on the other hand, took notice and became increasingly intrigued by the quiet young man that frequented the fellowship, volunteered, attended group events, but mysteriously disappeared as soon as events were finished and cleaning was done. He even bought a ticket to a crawfish boil just to support the ministry though he had a seafood allergy. How selfless, she thought. Eventually, they began to talk. At first, it was over GroupMe and church-related. Soon, a random prayer-request became months worth of in-depth conversations. And finally, the two moved from GroupMe to exchanging actual phone numbers. Uninterested in any more ambiguous relationships with Christian men, a confused and frustrated Joanna directly asked Jesse if he liked her. A week of prayer later, Jesse came back with a timid, yet affirmative answer. He then threw the question back at Joanna, to which she responded with a meme from the hit TV show, Spongebob. Despite her confusion, Jesse remained confident in his desire to pursue Joanna in a relationship while she prayed. Through witnessing his persistence, caring nature, sacrifices made for his family, and amazing humor, Joanna fell in love with him. And she continues to fall in love with Jesse further and further each day. And their journey has definitely been interesting. Through a pandemic. Through school applications, rejections, and eventual acceptances. Though major job changes. Many things changed, but by putting Jehovah first and surrounded themselves with wise counselors, both Jesse and Joanna continue to fall in love, learn to communicate better with each other, sacrifice, and demonstrate love as a verb.
