Although floor length evening gowns are standard fare for black tie weddings, you can get away with a formal cocktail dress (of the longer variety) or even an elegant suit. Please only wear a cocktail dress if it's very formal. A few other notes from Brides magazine state that your cocktail dress can fall above the knee, but it shouldn't get much shorter than that for a black-tie wedding. For this occasion, it's not recommended to show too much skin. Rather, keep the hemline modest and keep any cleavage to a minimum. Steer clear of anything that looks like you're going to a club. Instead, opt for sophisticated cocktail dresses made from rich fabric and fine details. Please don't wear red and white is an absolute NO-NO.
For a black-tie event, avoid wearing: Suits even if black. Black-tie dress code means a tuxedo - a tuxedo is comprised of a single- or double-breasted barathea (black wool) dinner jacket and matching trousers worn with a pleated white dress shirt. The shirt can have either a turn-down collar or a wing collar, which has points that stick out. Tuxedos are finished with cufflinks, a black bow tie, white pocket square, black patent leather shoes, and black dress socks. Cummerbunds (waist coverings) and waistcoats are optional.
