Question

What is the allamata?

Answer

The Allamata which translates to ‘Changing’ is the Cypriot custom which prepares the bride and groom to leave their families and start their life together. It is a time for decorating the bride and groom in their homes. The bride and groom’s family and friends participate in rituals that symbolize the couple’s commitment to each other and their place in the Cypriot culture. Traditional activities include wrapping red scarves, shaving the groom, dancing of the wedding clothes, and inscribing the bride’s friend’s names on the sole of her shoes.

Question
