On a warm night in July 2018, Hunter and I were both single and ready to mingle at Mango's Bar and Grill in Smith Mountain Lake, VA. I was there for my cousin's bachelorette party and he was there with a group of friends. When Hunter describes seeing me, he always picks on how I was dancing by myself with the group of girls standing by the stage. Momma and Daddy Hamm were actually the ones to encourage Hunter to make a move, so I have to say thank you! He grabbed a friend and they came over to ask Mary Dawn and me to dance. Now I saw the two guys walking towards us and immediately looked at Mary and said, "I get the tall one, okay?" She, of course, was fine with that and the story goes on. Hunter asked me to dance with him and actually taught me to swing dance that night. We danced together for a while, I got his number, and then returned to the group. And then I went back out on the floor to find him and dance some more. He didn't trust that I would actually text him, so this time, he asked for my SnapChat. I gave it to him and then we danced the rest of the night together. When closing time came around, he leaned down, kissed me, and I walked away. I mean who kisses some random guy at a bar and actually has a relationship come out of it?! Well, he snapchatted me before I could even get to the car and we planned a date for the next weekend. We've been together ever since!
Early on in our relationship, I explained to Hunter some of the special (and somewhat crazy) traditions of Sweet Briar. One of those traditions was the "Ring Game." Typically a Ring Game is played when a member of the senior class is announcing their engagement to their fellow classmates. The vice-president of the class will organize for all of the senior students to gather (typically at lunch) in a circle and the ring will be placed on a string to be passed around the circle three times. The first time the ring makes its way around the circle, everyone touches it and looks at how beautiful it is. The second time it goes around, no one touches it. The third time, whomever the ring belongs to grabs it! Since Hunter and I weren't together while I was a student at Sweet Briar, he decided to team up with my mom and Marcia to plan a Ring Game for our proposal. Marcia very sneakily had the Sweet Tones (the acapella group that I was a part of as a student) and some of my friends that were still students show up to play. I was told that the game was for my Sweet Tones "baby" and I was so excited for her! It never dawned on me that the game was actually for me! Once the ring was passed around all three times (and no one had claimed it), the door behind me opened and there stood my Prince Charming. Hunter got down on one knee and immediately quoted the Grinch saying, "Can I use your finger for a second?" He said a few other sweet things too...but moral of the story is I said yes!
