We found each other online, on Plenty of Fish (POF). What he wrote on his profile was funny, it caught my eye, I just had to message him. When we were talking, Darrell tried to convince me he was the ‘POF killer’. I didn't fall for it but I did fall for Darrell’s great sense of humor. I couldn’t wait to meet him!
Darrell has been a Las Vegas Raiders (formerly Oakland and LA Raiders) since he was a boy. After dating for a few months, we entered ‘football season’! I was warned that Darrell takes his Raiders football seriously...boy, they weren’t kidding! But, Darrell took the time to explain the game of football to me, while watching the Raiders. Now, the Raiders are OUR team. Just win baby!
We took a vacation to Denver, Colorado to celebrate our first anniversary together. We stayed in Denver but ventured out all around Colorado including: Denver Aquarium, Rocky Mountain National Park, Boulder, Pike’s Peak, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, and Garden of the Gods. One night, we had dinner at Hooters and got to watch some of the NFL Draft...a couple Raiders fans in Broncos country! Colorado is gorgeous and we would love to live there one day!
Darrell had to close at work New Year’s Eve. Knowing he wouldn’t be home until after midnight sometime, we planned to celebrate ‘West Coast New Year’s’. Work got super busy so that didn’t happen either. Darrell finally made it home, got cleaned up and got into his pajamas, I was already wearing mine (since I fell asleep well before midnight). We celebrated ‘Hawaii New Year’s’ at 4:00 am with a kiss and a hug. Darrell was lingering on my side of the bed, “What’s your New Year’s resolution,” he nervously asked me. Okay, something’s up! A minute later, I found out Darrell’s resolution, to get down on one knee and ask me to be his wife! An obvious “yes” followed!
When wedding plans began, Darrell and I both agreed we didn’t want a big wedding. Darrell suggested we elope in Colorado. Colorado has become a place dear to us ever since we vacationed there for our first anniversary. And what better date to become husband and wife on than our fourth anniversary. (That way Darrell will only have to remember one date 😉)
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders by the state, we were unable to take our planned vacation to Colorado to elope on our special day. With our set date being so important to us, we couldn't just simply change the date. Getting married in our friend’s backyard, while social distancing, was not the original plan but it's what we were able to do safely. I couldn't be happier knowing that I still got to marry my best friend on our anniversary. Plus, it will make an interesting story later on!
