In the midst of '92, Mike and I found ourselves at my brother Trex and Cynthia's wedding reception. Mike, working his charm behind the bar, didn't exactly request my number, but he played 20 questions until he uncovered that I was the voice behind the tunes at 103.9 The Wind. Smart move, considering that's where he tracked me down. I was about to embark on a trip to England and Scotland for a family vacation, leaving Mike with limited windows of opportunity. In our talks, I casually mentioned a hankering for Taco Bell, and, being the stand-up guy he is, Mike suggested delivering some. Unfortunately, our calendars were as misaligned as a broken compass, and the Taco Bell dream dwindled away. Fast forward to the other side of the pond. Our first morning in England, my hotel room played host to an unexpected, and stunning, floral delivery – compliments of Mike. The card read, "In lieu of a taco." I was genuinely impressed with his sleuthing skills; Sherlock Holmes would've given him a nod of approval. A photo of me with those flowers is posted in the Gallery if you're interested. Now, about our post-Scotland rendezvous – we went on one date, he sang “Suspicious Minds”, we shot pool, he walked me to my car, and that was it. The aftermath is a bit hazy; Mike swears I pulled the "Heisman," and he retaliated by dramatically tossing a Boys to Men CD out the window to avoid listening to “The End of the Road”. Talk about a quirky '90s rom-com twist. Fast forward three decades, and life decided to throw us a curveball…or maybe it was the perfect pitch. While FaceTiming with my son Philip, a call from "Mike Hinton" popped up. Cue the “utterly confused meme”. I asked Philip about knowing anyone with the last name Hinton. Turns out, Greer, Mike's son, was the culprit behind the call. As if that wasn't quirky enough, Philip and Greer share a cosmic connection – born in the same month of the same year, just 23 days apart. This serendipitous discovery led to reconnecting with Mike, starting with a coffee date, followed by dinner, a day out on the boat, and countless nights on the veranda. In those moments of endless conversation, intense laughter, and a love that grew deep, we both realized that we had finally found our "person."
