One night in Vero Beach, after a local show, Ash invited me to the beach to see the stars with a few other friends. Being the new guy in town, I had little friends and I had never been to the beach at night. I'm not sure what I was expecting to come of this, I enjoyed stargazing, but I wasn't prepared to discover the vast depth of darkness in her eyes that made me feel so at ease. A few weeks went by, I found out she was a waitress at a local restaurant and worked up the courage to go see her. There was an Irish band playing and I wanted an excuse to hold her in my arms…“Can I bother you for five minutes?” Ash agreed and we twirled in the dining room, hand in hand, eyes locked, and for a moment I caught a glimpse of eternity. After weeks of stopping by to see them at work, we went on our first date in March of 2023. Ash invited me to yoga and I invited her out to disc golf. We talked about life, love, and shared more laughter (mostly about how terrible she was at disc golf) and joy then we ever expected to find in this tiny random town. We unraveled each other, and I found the vastness of her eyes warm and invigorating. I found someone who would happily go the extra mile hand in hand, and would make sure I was okay while I worked long days in the hot sun. We have had our share of epic adventures, significant introspection, and incredible challenges. In between hiking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and a short lived attempt at cycling I never doubted for a second that Ash wasn't up for the challenge. We have found ourselves on a few foolhardy adventures, but we always made the best of our days despite our poor planning. Her coffee-tinted eyes always shined through the storm clouds of my own mind. I found someone who looked out for me with a gentle and intelligent critique in some of the best and worst moments of my life. Here is a soul that genuinely cared for my well being. The crazy part is that we both almost figured out how to live alone, then I guess by some stroke of luck we found each other. While we haven't quite figured out all the answers, we can at least find shelter and peace within each other. I’m blessed to have my plus one, the one who will go to the ends of the earth with me. Ashley is without a doubt the greatest treasure I could have ever hoped to find here in the Treasure Coast.
