Ashley was a student at Howard University. Hammerthon, a student at Rutgers, drove with friends to visit Howard's campus for a day during his spring break. It was a classic case of boy meets girl and it just so happened they were both from North Jersey. Although Ham was so nervous to introduce himself that Ashley barely made out his name, there was an instant spark and conversation flowed naturally. After chatting for about 10 minutes, they exchanged numbers & Ham was back on the road to New Jersey that same night. He told all of his friends during the ride home, "I'm gonna marry that girl." Ashley also shared with a friend that night that she'd met a cute guy who seemed refreshingly well-intentioned and looked him up on Facebook for some obviously necessary social media digging. It's safe to say they each had a strong sense that they'd met someone special. They kept in touch and two weeks later, Ashley drove home to NJ where they went on their first date. Two weeks after that, Ham drove back down to DC and asked Ashley to be his girlfriend after only a month of knowing one another. Many would say it was fast, including Ashley (me!), but the rest is history. When I reflect back on that night, I can't help but think about how we're meant to be. Had things gone traditionally for me, I would have graduated from Howard in 2013 with no reason to still be there. It was also very rare for me to still go to campus events like the one where we'd met. It's crazier on Ham's end, as he didn't even know about the road trip to DC until the night before. He saw friends packing, asked where to, and tagged along to network. Plus, what are the odds that our hometowns were 25 minutes apart, making it that much easier to visit one another regularly? We're convinced that crossing paths was no coincidence and we've been on a cloud ever since.
