We were both attending Miami Dade College orientation at John A. Ferguson High School—Egddis’s former high school. Once orientation wrapped up, we were assigned individual computers and instructed to quietly enroll in our classes. At first, there were two people sitting between us. Eventually, they were moved to other seats, and we found ourselves scooting down until we were sitting right next to each other. While Ashley was calmly and mindlessly enrolling in her first semester of college, Egddis had other plans. He struck up a conversation, asking question after question about how to sign up for classes… or so he claimed. Ashley hesitated—after all, we were strictly told not to talk—but Egddis wasn’t really interested in class enrollment. He was interested in her. After the proctor had to come by twice to quiet us down, Egddis made his move and asked Ashley for her number before she left. The rest, as they say, is history.
