David and I met for the first time 14 years ago when I joined our high school choir. This was only the first chapter of our story. My family had just moved to the Houston area, I was starting my Freshman year in high school, making friends and trying to find a “group” to fit into. David was well known among the choir and to me he seemed like the life of the party; and of course I had the biggest crush on him. Over the next 3 years we became friends and hung out with mutual friends, teased each other for the silliest of things, were on the same choir trips and choir camps, and made the best of memories. I feel like I can admit now that I was always trying to get his attention and find a way into his circle (let's be honest: who doesn’t do that when they are crushing on someone?). After those 3 years, David finally started to notice me as more than a friend and we actually started to have more feelings for each other. I would like to say this is where our story ends but this was only the beginning. We were both very young, a little dumb, and had a whole life to live before our story continued. This is where our second chapter started. Over the next 7 years we grew into adults who learned to appreciate the friendship we had always tried to keep up with. It wasn’t until the Christmas of 2017 that we reconnected. The next year we grew together, laughed a lot, and fell head over heels in love.
We love to plan “family adventure days” every so often each month. It was time for our July adventure day and as we narrowed down the ideas we landed on a day at the zoo which happens to be one of my favorite adventures but also a place where David and I had been on a date before. We spent the day walking around in the Texas summer heat looking at all the animals and wrangling our 5 year old. I will say that if you have ever walked the zoo in July you will know what I mean when I say that by the time we were finishing up we were all hot, tired, hungry, and a little more irritated than we were when we got there. As we were finishing up David insisted that we go on the train ride around the park outside of the zoo. To me this felt like a silly idea but I didn’t want to argue because Lacee loved it. The 15 minute train ride came to an end and I was ready to get in the car to go eat. Before we could leave we had to take just a couple more photos. So we walked through the little store to little shaded part by the pond to capture a couple more memories before we left. It was here, on July 23, 2019, where David got down on one knee and asked me to take our next and biggest adventure together and marry him. Of course I said “HELL YES.”
