Things To Do

Hemingway House

907 Whitehead Street, Key West, FL 33040

Key West’s biggest darling, Ernest Hemingway, lived in this gorgeous Spanish colonial house from 1931 to 1940. The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and The Green Hills of Africa were produced here, as well as many six-toed cats, whose descendants basically run the grounds.

Mallory Square

Mallory Square

400 Wall Street, Key West, FL 33040

Take all those energies, subcultures and oddities of Keys life and focus them into one torchlit, sunset-enriched street party. The child of all these raucous forces is Mallory Sq, one of the greatest shows on Earth. It begins in the hours leading up to dusk, the sinking sun a signal to bring on the madness. Watch a dog walk a tightrope, a man swallow fire, British acrobats tumble and sass each other.

Green Parrot

Green Parrot

601 Whitehead St, Key West, FL 33008

The oldest bar on an island of bars, this rogues’ cantina opened in the late 19th century and hasn’t closed yet. Its ramshackle interior – complete with local artwork littering the walls – only adds to the atmosphere, as does the colorful crowd, obviously out for a good time. The Green Parrot books some of the best bands – playing funk-laden rock, brassy jazz, juke joint blues and Latin grooves. A favorite of ours, we would have had our reception here if they were into that sort of thing.

Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden

Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden

518 Elizabeth Street, Key West, FL 33040
, (305) 294-0015

Nancy, an environmental artist and fixture of the Keys community, invites you into her backyard oasis where rescued parrots and macaws await visitors. From 10 to 11am, enjoy guided storytelling and handling, 11 to 3 is self-guided. Musicians are welcome to bring their instruments to play in the yard.

Bobby's Monkey Bar

900 Simonton Street, Key West, FL 33040
, (305) 294-2655

We went to Bobby's Monkey Bar in search of karaoke, but had an even better time meeting new people and staying waaaaaay too late at this epic dive bar. It can be smoky, and is cash only, but it's still a special place. There are pool tables and friendly bartenders.

B.O.'s Fish Wagon

801 Caroline Street, Key West, FL 33040
, (305) 294-9272

Looking like an old fishing boat that smashed onto the shore, BO's is awash with faded buoys, life savers and rusting license plates, and in some spots you needn't step outside to peer up at the moon. The seafood is fantastic – rich conch fritters, softshell crab sandwiches and tender fish tacos. It's a fun and lively spot for a meal, especially when there's live music (Thursday, Friday and Sunday).
