It was meant to be. Ash moved home a month early from Provo Utah, just in time to meet B who happened to be home on leave for a few days. B's sister, Esther, worked with Ash at the time and knew they would hit it off since they were both "into fitness". The first date was a comedy club followed by drinks while listening to a Metallica cover band. It was a carefree and lighthearted date. No expectations for anything other than fun since they both knew geography was not in our favor. The days to follow had the same vibe- just fun. They went on long drives in the red minivan, hung out at Layton park on the merry-go-round, Lagoon, dancing, and a Jack Johnson concert. The day came when B was to fly to Texas for the rest of his leave. They said their goodbyes and he left to the airport. To Ash's surprise, she shortly got a call saying B had changed his flight and they had 5 extra days together! They were both smitten. After that, it was a lot of letters to Afghanistan, phone calls and face-time until they could finally see each other again.
It was 5 AM on New Years day. B woke Ash up saying he had a surprise. They packed up the Range Rover, got coffee and left for the adventure. It happened to be snowing that morning. 2 hours later, to B's dismay, finds the hike he had imagined to go on was closed due to snow. Of course he had a plan B. The roads were slick but B was trying to beat the sunrise so they were going faster than they should have been. Coming down the canyon with snow on the road they began to fishtail then slam into the cement barricade that prevented them flying off the cliff into the woods. The car flipped shattering the windows and was on its side in the middle of the road. Somehow, no one was hurt. Seat belts were unbuckled, B lifted Ash up and out of the shattered window, handed her their pup and got out himself. Standing on the side of the road with snow falling on their faces staring at the totaled Range Rover, B turns to Ash and says "Well, if we can survive this, we can survive anything. Will you marry me?" With tears coming down Ash's face out of shock, terror and happiness she of course says "YES!" It was a beautiful, chaotic morning that really made them appreciate what they have.
