One of the best museums in the United States. We love the collection and its attendant green spaces. Always free.
The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. The Buffalo Bayou Park conservancy restored and repurposed the 87,500-square-foot Cistern into a magnificent public space for tours, performances, and art installations. You'll need to reserve an appointment to go inside!
A great contemporary art space. Always free.
Our favorite bookstore. Amazingly curated with interesting finds and important classics, it's definitely worth stopping in!
Our favorite bar. Owned by a friend, it features food and bev in addition to DJ showcases. Echoes hosts Ice House Radio, a community radio station live broadcast from the first floor. Local DJs spinning juicy original sets every Tuesday-Friday, 7-11pm.
Needs to be seen to be believed. Begun originally by Jeff McKissack as a shrine to health-giving oranges, The Orange Show has now become an art center dedicated to self-taught artists.
Fun natural wine bar with an extremely chill vibe.
An ice house! You know?
One block from our house. A life-saving green space for us during lockdown. Attached to the magnificent Hermann Park, Centennial Gardens boasts a vegetable garden, a rose garden, and a xeriscape garden.
James Turrell is a renowned contemporary artist who makes what he has dubbed Skyspaces. They are architectural places to view the sun rising and setting. As such, the skyspace is only open during sunrise and sunset. Plan accordingly!
Beautiful historic library in downtown adjacent to City Hall. The reading room there is magnificent and a favorite study area for Sophie.
