Six and a half years ago, a girl needed a new phone. Upon begging, she convinced her older sister--fresh off a flight, home for the summer, single and so not ready to mingle--to accompany her to the mall. Meanwhile, a tall, handsome, and incredibly ready-to-mingle employee, stood ready to assist his new customers. And so, an unexpected whirlwind summer romance began! It seems you know how this story leaves off: this fun little summer fling turned into a sorta forever-thing.
It was a cloudy, balmy day on Block Island. Maggie and Arthur were enjoying an end-of-summer vacation exploring a place Maggie had dreamed about since she was a kid. "Paris?" No. "Rome?" No, just listen. Rhode Island! Don't laugh, something about it always felt magical to her. The shape of the state, or something weird a kid finds attachment to. Maggie and Arthur enjoyed breakfast bagels at The Post and coffees at Persephone's, waiting for the sun to burn off the haze. Midday, they reached the Mohegan Bluffs and hiked down to the beach, wobbling over slippery rocks, avoiding the waves, and, of course, taking lots of film photos. Maggie was just about to complete a roll, "Two photos left! Let's take selfies," she said. Arthur pops beside her and she shoots off the final two photos, "Hopefully they turned out cute!" Maggie hands Arthur the camera, a silent and understood 'change my film for me?', and turns toward the water. "Mag, it's broken!" She whips her head around, "I didn't break it!" she defends but is instantly quieted as Arthur opens the back of the camera. Something sparkly and gold was sitting where the roll should be. Maggie will tell you, she can't remember a single thing Arthur said as he got down on one knee but she knows it was the most beautiful thing she's ever heard. It was the easiest yes of her life.
