We met each other while cleaning out a closet of old National Geographic curricula at the School District of Philadelphia - one of many times we were doing work that was outside of our job descriptions as the “young people” in the office. Liz: I was intrigued by Ashley as she told me about her global work. Ashley helped me calm down and be silly but also brave in a workplace where I felt a lot of stress and imposter syndrome. I knew something was different about our relationship too but couldn’t quite pin it down at first -- we had a weird symbiosis and I was a little scared of what that meant. Ashley: Liz Shriver was one of those people who started around the same time as me. After a few months of working at SDP, my cubical was moved next to hers. She was bright-eyed and inquisitive and I grew quite fond of her quickly. Spring came around and I had fallen for this Minnesotan but was not sure about her feelings for me. Past failed attempts such as the mixtape somewhat wooed her, the food truck treats didn’t have an effect, and the daily comic book we made was only an activity for her… Liz: I invited Ashley to a two-day birthday bash in Vermont, including long car rides, mixtapes, and talks about changing the world. Little did we know (or maybe we did) that this trip would help us into a lifelong relationship. Liz & Ashley: Somehow we knew we could depend on each other and work as a team and laugh so hard - we still don’t know how we knew, in the beginning, to hang on to each other and ride out the storms of young adulthood together. Maybe that’s the magic part. Our adventure continues riding hand and hand on Falcor’s back to the end of the earth.
