We were two people toiling away on internet dating sites fighting through an endless sea of bad dates. Night after night developing carpal tunnel and arthritis in our thumbs swiping left and right in the hopes that eventually someone worthwhile would pop up on our phone screens. Love is funny and cruel. Love doesn't care what, when, where, why, or how. The only thing love cares about is who. One day we both swiped right on Bumble. Kristy had to make the first move as that is how Bumble works. After a couple days of chatting back and forth there was an eventual exchange of numbers and a plan to meet on Friday night April 5th, 2019. As cliche as it sounds, we met face to face at the end of a bar. Normally first meets are awkward affairs. Our first date wasn't idyllic but it was comfortable. Conversation was free flowing. Silences were short lived but lacked the awkward feeling that can come when two people have no history. Most importantly, no one wanted the night to end. Minutes stretched into hours. One game of giant Jenga or Connect 4 became 2 then 3 then 4. The bar turned into a restaurant. The restaurant became a dance club. Our date that began with an agreement to have a beer and a cider at 7:30pm turned into closing down the club at 2:30am Saturday morning. Our first meeting was an eventful affair. We made our way through three different locations, one recently ended highland games event, a drag show where James had his shirt stripped off by a drag queen and our first kiss. For a first date between two people with no prior history who met on an internet dating app, our story began as most do, drinks at a bar, and became.....something else entirely. Two people who recognized quickly what was happening was exceptionally difficult to find. Two people who reached out into an endless sea of disappointment against the odds and found love.
