Question

How do I get to Colombia?

Answer

For Medellín, you'll fly into José María Córdova International Airport (MDE). It's the main international airport serving the city. Round trip flights normally cost around 600$ per person. See "Travel Page".

Question

Getting around within Colombia?

Answer

You can also use ride-sharing apps like Uber. Uber is cheap in Colombian, with prices ranging from 2-10$ for rides within the city, and roughly 40$ from the airport to the city (which is a 40 minute drive).

Question

Do you have any hotel recommendations?

Answer

On the "Travel" page there are a variety of suggestions. Airbnbs start at 30$ a night, while cute hotels start around 100$ a night. You get more bang for your buck because Colombian Airbnbs and hotels are much nicer and more stylish than what you'd typically find in Canada.

Question

What currency is used?

Answer

Colombian pesos (COP) are the preferred currency, they exchange roughly 3000 pesos to 1 CAD. You can exchange before you leave Canada, at the airport, or at ATMs. Majority of places accept major credit cards as well.

Question

Is Medellin safe for tourists?

Answer

Despite it's reputation, Medellín has transformed dramatically and is generally very safe for tourists, especially in areas like El Poblado. Like any major city, the main concern is pickpocketing and bag snatching in crowded spots. Please be mindful of your belongings, avoid overly flashy jewelry, and keep your phone secure in a front pocket.

Question

What is the climate like in Medellin?

Answer

Medellín has a pleasant climate year round. Temperatures tend to hover around 25°C, but can feel hotter with the sun. At nighttime a sweater or jacket is recommended. At 4900 feet of altitude and being close to the equator please take care to protect yourself from the sun!

Question

Is the tap water safe to drink in Medellin?

Answer

Absolutely. Medellin's water is treated and purified and can be drank straight from the tap.

Question

How much do things cost in Colombia?

Answer

Fortunately for Canadians, the Canadian dollar has strong purchasing power in Colombia. Ubers can range from 3-10 CAD for inner-city trips. Meals can be found for as low as 3 CAD. A pancake breakfast at recommended Smash cafe is 9$ CAD, while a salmon bowl at the same cafe is 15$. The prices you see in Colombia always include taxes. Tipping is optional and set at a standard rate of 10% - they will ask you before they add it. Expect great prices on Colombian food and local goods. International brands, however, will be similarly or more expensive than in Canada. We def encourage you to shop local!

Question

Do Canadian cellphones work in Colombia?

Answer

Yes your phone will work, however Rogers and Bell charge high fees for roaming. Your hotel, the airport, malls, and restaurants will have free Wi-Fi available. Personally, I suggest using an app called Airalo and downloading an E-Sim before you leave Canada - this should cost you about 12$ for 15 days of use.

Question

Do people speak English in Colombia?

Answer

Generally no; English is not widely spoken in Colombia. Some workers in tourist areas will speak basic English, and many restaurants have an English menu upon request. The good news is that Colombians are quite friendly, even with a language barrier! We do suggest you utilize Google translate as needed.

Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

We're requesting cocktail attire for our celebration. If you've been looking for an excuse to wear something extra fancy, this is it!

Question

Are there any other events that I should know about around the wedding?

Answer

YES! We plan to organize some group trips to popular areas around Medellin as soon as we know everyone's travel dates. We're happy to give suggestions if anyone wants to venture off on their own :) Two trips in particular we would like to plan as a group are Guatape and Communa 13.

Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

Yes.
