In December of 2012, April had just began working a new job at CVS in Atlanta, whereas James had been employed with Coca-Cola. April worked as a supervisor and James as a delivery driver, and their paths crossed as he would be the delivery driver for her store. Several months had passed by and April began to take notice of James. He rarely spoke but he was friendly. One day April had mentioned to her great friend Chanise F. that she had taken up an interest in James. As her shyness would not let her speak, Chanise spoke up for April. She asked James if he was in a relationship, to which he replied no. She then asked him if he would be interested in getting to know April, because she had taken an interest in him. He laughed and replied yes and they exchanged numbers and a friendship began. They spoke for several months but unfortunately nothing more developed. Over the course of several years, they would keep in contact with each other. In October of 2016, James reached back out to April. They both caught up with each other and spoke about their life changes, only for both to find out that each other was doing well. As the months began to pass in December of 2016, James finally asked April to be his girlfriend to which she agreed.
In January of 2019, James and April took a trip to New York City, it would be both of their first time visiting. They only planned to stay for the weekend with hopes of seeing all the sites it had to offer. On Jan. 19th, James and April began their day with a tour, after their tour they walked around the city to take in the sites. After touring downtown Manhattan, they headed uptown to go see the iconic Plaza Hotel and Central Park. They were dropped off near Central Park, where they walked over to the Plaza Hotel. They stopped to take pictures, with hopes of one day being able to stay there. After pictures were taken they were headed back into Central Park. While walking to the park they had come upon vendors who were offering rides on horse drawn carriages. James mother Valerie had spoken to them about this activity and had encouraged them to take one. So, April asked James if they could take the ride, but he slightly declined her request and assured her that they would go another time. Slightly disappointed, April suggested that they go into the park before heading back to their hotel. They sat in the park taking in its beauty while also taking pictures for their memories. Shortly after, April suggested heading back to which James agreed, but upon leaving James received a phone call. As they were leaving the park, James began to detour towards a man standing near a horse and carriage. He greeted the driver and looked towards April who was in disbelief. They boarded the horse drawn carriage and began to ride through Central Park. They came to a stop so that they could take some photos. After a few photos they were summoned to return. April noticed that someone was now sitting in their carriage. Upon approaching the carriage April realized that her sister Andrea was in it. Andrea had dressed as her favorite Disney princess Tiana. Her sister then handed James a gold flower and with that flower he turned towards April and asked her to marry him.
