Our Proposal

Please enjoy our perspectives of one of our favorite days yet!

Her Side

It was July 11th, 2022. We had just arrived at Northbrook Cottages in Hague. The Smailers had retrieved the white boat from Tante Drea and Jeff. So, Alex asked if I wanted to go for a sunset cruise with him. This didn't raise any flags, as we have done this many times on Lake George trips before. However, Megan had mentioned that she had some games prior to this; so those that know me well, know I love to play games. So I suggested that we stay in the cabin and play some games with the family. But, Alex was quick thinking and said "Well, we don't know what the weather will be like tomorrow, so we should go tonight." I agreed; and I went to prepare myself for the boat ride. I had on my gray “Border Collie Mom” shirt and black biker shorts. My hair was disheveled and I had no makeup on. Completely prepared for a proposal…. Anyway, when I came out of the cabin, I noticed Alex was gone. I asked his mom where he went. She told me he already got on the boat......

...

This is where I began to raise some flags of suspicion. Alex had always waited for me, and we would walk to the boat together. So, I thought that him going to the boat first was strange. I made my way to the dock and hopped on the boat. I love to sit in the front right bow seater. It is located directly in front of the driver. Alex asked me to switch to the left bow seater to even out the weight distribution in the boat. I hopped over to the other side, and we left. We were speeding through the water for about three minutes when Alex abruptly slowed down the boat. This was suspicious because Alex never ever slows down in the middle of the lake without a reason. I asked, “What are you doing? Why’d you slow down?” Alex replied, “I just wanna cruise a little bit.” I gave him a questioning, “okay?’ and turned back to the bow to glimpse at my surroundings more clearly......

...

We were in the middle of the lake. The sun was setting perfectly between two mountain silhouettes. The breeze was gorgeous and the air was crisp. While I was taking in the view, the boat turned off. It was at this point where I thought. “This is it. This has to be it. Don’t turn around yet. Wait a minute.” After waiting for what felt like an eternity, but was realistically only 20 seconds; I turned around. Alex was closing the glovebox with a ring box in his hand. He walked to my side and said. “April, It’s been a long time coming…” and got down on one knee. At this point, I blacked out and don’t recall much of his speech. I do, however, remember him saying “That’s why I want you to be my wife.” He needed a little prompting that there was a question meant to be asked at the conclusion of that statement. Then, he asked. And, I, of course, said yes!

His Side

I knew I wanted to marry April from the first day I met her, so choosing where to propose to her was always on my mind. Lake george has significant meaning for both of our families and was the perfect choice. As the day drew closer I was reciting in my head what I would say over and over to make sure I get it right… well that practice was futile as you will find out. The time came to go on the boat ride just before sunset. Once we were on the boat I tried to act as normal as possible, which I know now is completely contradictory to my normal behavior. I could tell she was slightly skeptical, so I stopped the boat and went for the ring......

...

Of course I fumbled around in the glove box for 3 or 4 precious seconds, and when I finally got the ring in position she was staring right at me. I then proceeded to get down on one knee and recite 0% of the speech I had prepared. I told her how I knew from the start she was the woman I would marry and that this moment had been a long time coming and that’s why I want her to be my wife. Then the moment came to ask the big question and somehow I brain farted, but April raised her eyebrows and said “isn’t there supposed to be a question in there?” and I said “oh right, will you marry me?” and that was followed with an emphatic yes and the rest is history!

For all the days along the way
