Patrick and Anwuli met in June of 2014, during her final year of medical school. He had just graduated from the University of Dayton School of Law and was working a temporary litigation case in Dayton, Ohio. Anwuli was visiting Dayton for two weeks as part of her audition tour for an ENT residency position. Patrick and Anwuli happened to sublet rooms at the same location. This two week chance meeting changed their lives. The first time Patrick saw Anwuli, he was carrying a laundry basket full of clothes, which he immediately set down, to engage in conversation with her. They immediately hit it off, talking about a wide range of topics; from music to aliens. They spent every evening of the next five days getting to know each other. Six days after they met, Patrick took a weekend trip for a friend’s bachelor party. Missing each other during this trip highlighted how close they had become. Two days later, when Patrick returned, they shared their first kiss. This is Anwuli’s favorite memory. It was perfect. They were at a park, star gazing, when it happened. At the end of Anwuli’s two weeks in Dayton, they said goodbyes. Dating was out of the question because Anwuli did not know where her residency would be. Patrick, also didn’t know where his next job assignment would take him. But they were very happy to have met each other and grateful for those amazing two weeks. They soon discovered that they couldn’t help but keep in touch. After numerous phone conversations and few visits, on August 1, 2014, they decided to start dating. It was a long distance relationship at first with lots of trips between Ohio and Michigan. Anwuli started residency in Grand Rapids and Patrick also started a new permanent job in Dayton. They were very happy but wanted more so Patrick made the big move to Grand Rapids in November of 2015, sixteen months into the relationship. So many great things have happened since. A proposal followed by the birth of their son, Tobe, the following year!

Patrick proposed during the couple's vacation to Hawaii. They were spending a beach and snorkeling day at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. The proposal was very romantic, in a secluded portion of the beach. The beach is Anwuli's favorite place and Patrick could not have picked a more beautiful location. They got engaged and then spent the rest of the evening with sea turtles!
