What??? Hawaii has a Palace? You bet, Iolani Palace is the only official royal residence in the United States. Built in 1882 by King Kalākaua, he was known as the ‘Merrie Monarch’ and was instrumental in revitalizing the Hawaiian culture. Just 11 years later, the monarchy under Queen Lili’uokalani was overthrown by the United States and 66 years later in 1959, Hawaii was named the 50th State.

A leisurely paved hike ~2.5 miles (4 km for any metric users) round-trip on the eastern most point of O’ahu, offers views of the Makapu’u Lighthouse (1909), the small islands of Mānana and Kāohikaipu, and on very clear days, Moloka’i and Lanai.
