I first noticed Jessica at Cook Middle School basketball games when she would come watch her son, Jayden, play. As a School Resource Officer, I would see her at the games and always make a point to speak to her. From the very beginning, there was something about her that caught my attention. The truth is, I wanted to ask for her phone number for a long time, but I never had the nerve to do it. Instead, I played it cool, stayed patient and waited for what I felt would be the right opportunity. As time went on and Jaleiah was in her eighth-grade year I found myself wanting to know more and more about Jessica. I paid attention whenever I saw her and tried to learn everything I could about the amazing woman she was. The more I learned, the more I knew she was someone special. Finally, one day, I decided it was time to take a chance. I asked Jaleiah if she would ask her mother if I could have her phone number. Thankfully, Jessica said yes. That simple request changed everything. What started with a phone number turned into conversations, friendship, laughter, love, and a relationship that neither of us could have imagined. Looking back now, it's amazing to think that the woman I was too nervous to ask out at those basketball games is the same woman I get to spend the rest of my life with. And from that moment on the rest was history.
