There are no gas stations or convenience stores between Fountain Hills and Payson. Fill up your tank before you head up the hill! Check AZ511.gov for traffic conditions before you travel up to Payson. It is rodeo weekend, so expect a lot of traffic. Also, there have been numerous fires that occasionally close the highway in one or both directions, so make sure to check www.inciweb.wildfire.gov for any closures due to fire. You can click on the incident and then check the info, closures etc. If temps are high, turn off your AC and inside, circulating air when going up steep portions of the highway so your vehicle does not overheat. Parts of the journey will have no cell reception. There is no reception at the reception, so send any texts or make any calls before marking the turn onto Houston Mesa Road.
If you are coming from Phoenix, Friday and Saturday evening traffic will be packed with campers and rodeo goers. Once you hit the first light in Payson, there will be a lot of rodeo traffic. Plan accordingly!
When entering Payson, anything past the casino will be the best price for gas.
Semi-formal (avoid stilettos)
There will be plenty of parking in the church parking lot!
