Q: What is a Novus Ordo Nuptial Mass? A Novus Ordo Nuptial Mass is a Catholic wedding ceremony celebrated within the context of the Mass, according to the modern Roman Rite, also known as the "Novus Ordo" (Latin for New Order) Mass. This form of the Mass is the most commonly celebrated form of the liturgy in Catholic churches today. In a Nuptial Mass, the couple exchanges their vows and receives the Sacrament of Matrimony, all within the framework of the Eucharistic celebration. The ceremony includes readings from Scripture, prayers, the exchange of vows, and the blessing of the marriage by the priest. For Catholic couples, this form of the Mass offers a meaningful way to begin their marriage by receiving Holy Communion and the sacramental grace that comes with it.
Q: Why is the wedding in English and Latin? Ecclesiastical Latin (or "Church Latin") is considered a sacred language and is the official language of the Roman Catholic Church that is used for it's liturgical worship. We originally were planning to have a Traditional Nuptial Mass where the entire ceremony would have been in Latin. After much consideration, we instead opted for the Novus Ordo Nuptial Mass where we are able to also incorporate English so that more attendants can understand and join in the worship of The Lord.
