Mérida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. It is a city with excellent food, few foreign tourists and very safe. This is the best way to get to know part of the Riviera Maya as a Mexican! The closest beach is Puerto Progreso 30 minutes from downtown Mérida. If you plan to stay longer, we have recommendations for you to explore the area. We have hotel and Airbnb recommendations for you! American Airlines is the best option to travel directly from Denver, Charlotte or Toronto to Cancun at more affordable prices. From Cancun Airport there are 3 options to get to Mérida: 1. Rent a car and drive 3 hours 2. Buy ADO bus tickets. 3. Take the Tren Maya.
