Our First Date

02/17/2025

It was a cold February day, but the sun was oddly shining. I had good hopes about this one. We had only been talking for about a week, but I felt we really connected. There was just so much in common between us. Plus, he made me laugh. We met up at the movie theater, and he opened the door for me as we walked in. I knew we were off to a good start! He paid for the movie, the popcorn, and the candy, another green flag. Then, we sat down in the darkened theatre, nervous and ready for the movie to start. We made some small talk, the details I can’t remember now, but I know I was intrigued by this guy. Before too long, the movie started. In between the flashes and daring doos of superhero shenanigans, I couldn’t help but feel I was being watched. I’m not sure how much of the movie he remembers because I could feel his eye on me almost the entire movie. In my head, I was thinking, what's this guy’s problem? Is there something on my face? Did I forget to brush my teeth? Am I going to have to excuse myself, exit stage right, fly the coop? As I sat there trying to enjoy the movie, my mind kept coming up with a multitude of reasons. I couldn’t focus on the movie. By the time the credits rolled, I wanted to scream ‘WHAT DO YOU WANT!’ to him. Instead, I asked him if he enjoyed the movie. He said yes as we nerded out, gabbling about what was to come in the MCU until everyone had left the theatre. Then he asked me something I thought would never come out of his mouth. “Can I kiss you?” he asked softly. I was a little taken aback because I never do this type of thing, especially on the first date. But somehow, something deep down inside of me said ‘yes.’ And there it was, my first kiss with Anthony Rose. It was magical. I knew I had to keep seeing this boy. And so I did. We continued our date by walking through the shops around the theater. Neither of us wanted the date to end. When we finished window shopping, it was getting close to dinner time, but we didn’t want to stop seeing each other. He let me pick where we ate, so we went to Chick-fil-A, where Anthony conveniently forgot his wallet in the car. I didn’t mind, though, because he had paid for almost our entire date already. We sat on the same side of the booth because we wanted to be close together. Before too long, we were back in his car, and he was dropping me back at mine. We sat there listening to his playlist: a mix of Zach Bryan, Zach Top, Keith Whitley, and other country artists I hadn’t heard before. He sang them all to me. As I watched him perform, I couldn’t help but think that this could be the one. Then, as a final goodbye, he gave me another kiss, longer this time. As I drove home, butterflies were flying, and I couldn’t wait to see this man again.
