Jamie and Anthony were co-workers for the City of Long Beach. Jamie started working for the city in 2003 and Anthony was hired in 2007. This is not your "love at first site" story. They met on Anthony's first day, but rarely worked together at first. Over time, they became friends while working more frequent together. Their text conversations became more frequent and longer. Anthony would always make a point to mention to Jamie how they were "just friends." Finally, on June 5th, 2010, Anthony took Jamie out on their first date and they have been together ever since.
On September 30, 2017, Jamie woke up thinking it was going to be like any other typical Saturday. Anthony had left for work at 4am, Jamie was going to spend the day with her friend. In the evening, Anthony and Jamie planned on going to attend Anthony's co-workers birthday party. In the late afternoon, they met back up at their apartment and headed to the peninsula of Long Beach where the birthday party was being held. As they approached the home, no lights were on and there wasn't any party noise to be heard. Jamie suggested they wait in the car a for a few minutes so they wouldn't be the first ones to arrive. Anthony said they were already an hour and half late, and led Jamie down a side gate. Reluctantly, Jamie followed. At the side door, Jamie again mentioned not seeing any lights on and not hearing any noise. Anthony then pulled out a key from his pocket and unlocked the front door. Confused, Jamie walked into the small, dark foyer with Anthony. When they turned the corner, Jamie saw a stair case with rose petals and candles. Jamie then understood what was happening. Anthony led Jamie up the stairs into the main part of the home into the kitchen and living room area. Anthony got on one knee, expressed his love, and asked Jamie to marry him. She said yes! Anthony cooked them dinner and they spent the evening in front of the fireplace. It turns out Anthony did not go to work at 4am that day. The afternoon before, while Jamie was at work, he rented an Airbnb (an online home rental service). On their engagement day he went to the Airbnb at 4am, slept a few more hours (remembering to bring his work clothes and bag, so Jamie wouldn't be suspicious) and prepped for his proposal. He also texted Jamie's friend to keep her out longer, since he needed some more time. His trickery paid off, and Jamie was very surprised.
