Flight
Rio has two main airports: Galeão (GIG), which handles international flights, and Santos Dumont (SDU), which mainly serves domestic flights. Both airports are about a 30-minute drive from Rio’s beautiful beaches, depending on traffic. If you have a connecting flight to Rio through São Paulo (GRU), you’ll need to clear immigration and collect your luggage at GRU for customs, then drop it off again for your domestic flight to Rio. If you choose to fly to São Paulo and buy a separate ticket on a local airline to Rio, you’ll also need to clear immigration, collect your luggage, and check in again with the local airline. Bags are not automatically transferred between separate tickets Airports that fly direct to Rio (GIG) from the U.S. are: Miami (MIA), Atlanta (ATL), New York (JFK) and Houston (IAH). ✈️ Tip: Set Google Flights or Skyscanner alerts for "GIG - Rio de Janeiro"
