Evelyn was living in Amherst, MA. Anthony was in Hampton, VA. They both had profiles on the dating app Hinge. Evelyn decided to take a trip to see her sister Sonia, in Williamsburg, VA, before the start of the fall 2022 semester; that Saturday, August 20th, the plan was for Sonia and Evelyn to visit the Upper Shirley Winery, which they did. When Evelyn landed in Norfolk, she made the impulsive decision to change her location on Hinge, just to see what would happen. Anthony was somewhat burned out with the dating scene and hadn’t been active on dating apps for quite a while. Out of boredom, he was skimming through profiles when he came upon Evelyn’s. He found her pictures captivating and her profile intriguing. After perusing her profile, he decided he would like to meet her. However, misfortune almost struck. Intending to swipe right on her profile to indicate his interest, his excitement caused him to accidentally swipe left. He was dejected at the thought of the opportunity he had just missed. He continued to browse profiles for several more hours to try to find Evelyn again but had no luck. Finally, Anthony thought to himself, “if I’m meant to meet her, she’ll pop up again at some point.” Clearly, the Lord, and the Hinge algorithm, had a plan. The next day, Anthony received a completely unrelated notification from the Hinge app. When he clicked on the notification, there was Evelyn. As Evelyn and Sonia were leaving the winery, Evelyn checked her profile and saw that Anthony had commented on one of the prompts in her profile. The prompt asked about a bad dating experience; Evelyn shared that she had been set up on a blind date and while they were walking around a festival, her date asked if she was hungry and then proceeded to buy two hot dogs and eat both. Anthony couldn’t believe the story was true and had to inquire about what exactly happened, and that started their text exchange. The texts back and forth seemed to flow naturally, and they were both pleasantly surprised at the substance within their conversation. They had both grown tired of trite texting that seemed to be the norm with the folks they encountered on the app. Evelyn shared with Anthony that she was in the area just to visit her sister for the weekend. He suggested that if she found herself back in the area they should connect for coffee. After a few more messages about work and their pet peeves, they exchanged last names and then exchanged phone numbers; and so, it began. Although neither of them wanted to engage in a long-distance relationship they spent the rest of August and the month of September texting and talking on the phone, a lot. Evelyn let it slip that Sonia's birthday is at the beginning of October and that she might be back in the area to help her sister celebrate. She was really looking for an excuse to return to Virginia to see what a date with Anthony might be like and celebrating her sister’s birthday seemed like a great one. In typical male fashion, Anthony tried to play it cool when Evelyn mentioned that she would be returning to Virginia. He was, naturally, receptive to the idea but did his best to hide just how excited he was at the prospect of spending real time with this bright and engaging woman. Anthony suggested they get together when she came to town. Their first date was Friday, October 7th at the Second Street American Bistro in Williamsburg. The next day they went miniature golfing, and on Sunday they had breakfast with Sonia and her husband Curtis, yep he met the family on their first date. After their first date, it was clear to Evelyn and Anthony there was a spark between them worth pursuing. They made plans to see each other again in November, this time Anthony traveled to Amherst. After that, their conversations deepened, and they decided to continue seeing each other. And that’s how it all began.
