It was October 2017. Annie had just moved to San Francisco from Seattle, and was eager to jump into a whole new world. Brad had already been in SF for a few years, and was feeling the itch to try new things. In a tale of modern romance, we met on a dating app (Brad had a cute photo with a dog, Annie referenced avocados)... but it wasn't until we met at a tiki bar in San Francisco that it all really clicked. As the fake rain poured down in the Tonga Room and we sipped on (very generous) tropical cocktails, we talked and joked for hours. Annie right away saw how compassionate and thoughtful Brad was, and Brad saw how kind and intelligent Annie was, and we knew there was something special. Over the next few weeks, we spent a lot of time together, from hiking the Batteries-to-Bluffs trail in the northwest corner of SF, to making homemade Chinese food, to sniffing the sweet fragrances of the SF Botanical Garden, to dressing up for a Halloween party, to building a tradition around high quality brunching... after a few short weeks it felt like we had already known each other for years, and yet we were so excited to learn more and experience more together!
On the flight to Maui over winter break 2018, Annie noticed Brad was a little more anxious than usual. She didn't realize that a TSA bag check an hour earlier almost revealed the ring hidden in his carry-on bag! As Annie and Brad synchronized their screens to watch "Crazy Rich Asians" together on the plane, Brad furtively observed as happy tears streamed down her face during the leading couple's proposal. Brad wanted to yell, "that's going to be YOU!" but he kept quiet. Annie had no idea what was in store... The next morning we woke up early and decided to make Makena Beach our first real stop of the trip. Annie hates the rain, so was less motivated to head out as the clouds darkened the sky and drops began to fall. But she found that Brad was extremely motivated to get this beach visit underway, so off we went. Pulling up to the beach, sunbathers deterred by the weather streamed off the sand, so the best parking spots opened up for us to grab. Unloading our gear from the car under intermittent drizzle, we headed out towards the ocean. Annie wanted to get close to the water where everyone else was, but Brad suggested that a more peaceful and secluded area would be best. Always accommodating, Annie relented and helped set up camp. "How about a picture?!" Brad exclaimed, producing a tripod and a dated point-and-shoot camera he hadn't used in years. Annie just wanted to lay down and enjoy the beach, but she played along and posed for a shot. After all, the clouds were parting and the sun was beginning to shine. Having confirmed that the camera worked and everything was in focus, Brad suggested taking one more. Annie played along, but was confused why Brad was all of a sudden kneeling in the sand. Brad finally pulled out the ring, and explained why she was the one and only person for him. Annie was shocked, burst into tears, and said YES OF COURSE I will marry you! And the rest is history!
