The Story

He didn't call me for over a year!

2014: It was my 2nd Easter in Philly and I attended the Vigil Mass at St. John the Evangelist. Abe was reading for the mass and we first noticed each other on the church steps when they lit the fire for the Easter candle. 2015: I had become involved with Jack’s YACs, the young adult group at St. John's, and attended one of their swing dances. Abe liked to attend the dances. Abe asked me to dance (he is a good swing dancer). We spent the night talking and he asked for my number. HE NEVER CALLED. 2016: I was now on the YACs planning committee and we had a swing dance. Abe is in charge of all the IT at St. John’s. We were getting ready for the dance when everything went wrong and we had no speakers. The following week I got a call from Abe to talk about the speaker problems. We chatted a few times after that. Soon he began to ask me to attend events with him and some of his friends: swing dances, soccer match viewings, etc. I always had a conflict. I felt bad having to say no a lot (but was also confused, was he asking me out?). So finally I was able to meet him and some of his friends to watch a Copa América soccer match, and I had a good time. After that we began talking and hanging, and he showed me all the delights of Chinatown. December 26 2021: Abe asked me to marry him on the feast of the Holy Family. We forgot to take pictures in front of the altar on Christmas, which we do every year, so Abe suggested we take them after the 10:30 mass. After mass we asked a friend, Nadine, to take our pictures and I told Abe take off his coat (which had the ring in the pocket). So he takes it off, and has Nadine take a million pictures. Then he says “let's take one with us kissing,” which I thought was very unlike him. I think we are done, then he says “one more,” and he runs to the pew and pulls out a box. He got on one knee in front of the altar, opened the box and inside was the most sparkly ring. He could barely get the words out as he was very emotional. I said YES!
