About Symi

Symi is one of the twelve main islands of the Dodecanese, located just north of Rhodes and close to the Turkish coast, which you can clearly see from the island.
The island is known for its colourful, classically inspired architecture, with elegant façades and distinctive houses.
There are several small hamlets, but only one main village: Gialos, where you’ll be staying. It’s made up of the harbour (Gialos) and the upper village (Horio), connected by the "Kali Strata", the famous “beautiful staircase”.
Symi has a rich history, shaped by sponge diving and shipbuilding.
In the south of the island is the seaside Monastery of Panormitis, an important Orthodox pilgrimage site dedicated to Saint Michael. According to tradition, sweeping in front of the icon is said to bring fertility.
