The Barat is a procession from the grooms home to the wedding venue. Thomas will get on a decorated white horse and friends will be playing a dhol (drum). The grooms family and friends dance and have a good time while they make their way to the wedding. The bride’s brother will help Thomas off the horse and bring him to her mother. The mother then does a welcome prayer for the groom. She will put flowers, a tikka (red powder on forehead), and rice on the groom. Feed him a sweet (ladoo). During this portion Thomas will wear a pagari (turban) as he is wearing a crown like lord vishnu for the ceremony. Anju’s mother will grab his nose during this meeting so as to bring him back down to earth.
Formal Indian or Western Wear (cocktail attire) for wedding and reception.
Yes! This event is all about celebration, color, and sharing our big fat Indian culture with all of our loved ones! The more festive the better! Just a note, saree’s can be tough to tie and wear if you are not used to them. A good alternative for new to Indian fashion are lehengas, churidars, pre stitched sarees and gowns.
