This mercado has been around since the 1800s! It is a fun place to get to know the local products, see a few street performers, eat local cuisine and see what it's like as a simple day in the life in the city. This is a great inexpensive place to buy souvenirs! The surrounding area has government buildings, national monuments, and local shops as well. My dad and many family members went here to buy things and to enjoy the day. My dad in particular, when he had enough money, would go inside the Mercado to the Sorbeteria Lolo Mora for the cream-flavored ice cream, which has a creamy vanilla with cinnamon flavor that is so delicious. If you go for the ice cream, which I HIGHLY recommend, just know that you may be sitting in the same chair as my dad as a child, or many other family members as well!
Cisco and I roamed these streets together. The Museo de Oro is in the area as well. This is a quick and inexpensive stop to get to see some wonderful ancient artifacts and learn about the history of our indigenous peoples. Don't forget the gift shop, Cisco still makes fun of me for buying so much LOL
